Ronaldo hits 100 Champions League wins as Juventus soar into last 16
NC Monitoring Desk
TURIN: Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri hailed the impact Cristiano Ronaldo was having on the Italian champions as the Portuguese star became the first player to achieve 100 Champions League wins in Tuesday´s 1-0 success over Valencia that clinched their passage to the knockout rounds.
Ronaldo, who joined Juventus last summer from Real Madrid — is targeting a sixth Champions League title to add to his four with the Spanish team and one with Manchester United.
The Italian team are looking for their third European title and first since 1995. Last season they exited in the quarter-finals to Ronaldo´s Real Madrid.
The 33-year-old played a key role against Valencia providing the assist on 59 minutes which Croatian Mario Mandzukic tapped in for his third goal in as many matches. Juventus had needed just a point to ensure qualification.
Their win combined with Manchester United´s late 1-0 win over Young Boys at Old Trafford means Valencia crash out of the competition. Allegri´s side will now have to wait to see whether they top Group H when they play their final group game mid-December in Bern against Young Boys.
Ronaldo came out firing on all cylinders after his controversial red card during his first Champions League game for Juventus in Valencia back in September, which Allegri´s side still won 2-0.
The five-time Ballon d´Or winner had two chances within the first three minutes to add to his record tally of 121 Champions League goals.
Valencia had their best chance before the break when Mouctar Diakhaby´s header off a corner was punched out with one hand by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Just before the hour mark, Ronaldo broke free of Valencia defender Gabriel and with some fancy footwork fired low across the face of the goal leaving Mandzukic to finish off.
Valencia thought they had scored the equaliser two minutes later but Diakhaby´s header was ruled to have come off his hand.
Valenica goalkeeper Neto kept out a late goal-bound header from Ronaldo, who rose to meet Paulo Dybala´s out-swinging corner.

‘Yasir outstanding with ball, seen amazing spell in Test after a long time’

Sallu backs Sarfraz as skipper in all three formats

By Syed M Osama

KARACHI: Former Test cricketer and chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed Sallu hailed Pakistan cricket team for their strong bounce back against New Zealand in 2nd Test in Dubai and said that this is a whole team’s efforts, the entire team deserves appreciation.

Talented youngsters like Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Yasir Shah and Muhammad Abbas are the future hopes of Pakistan cricket and should be part of the team in every game from now on, he said while talking to National Courier here yesterday.

Sallu said that it was good to see our batsmen and bowlers finally coming in winning rhythm.
Backing skipper wicket-keeper/batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, Sallu said he has proved himself in all three formats of the game.
He said that Sarfraz is a good skipper, he knows how to make his team fight in most difficult situations.
Answering a query, former chief selector said that definitely Sarfraz Ahmed is leading from the front and I think he should be captain in all the three formats.
Earlier, batting legend Zaheer Abbas said that Sarfraz Ahmed needs to step down from his Pakistan captaincy in at least one format to relieve some pressure off his shoulders.
Sallu also hailed Sarfraz’s decision to declare the innings in 2nd Test ( 418-5) and said this is a brave decision.

“Almost all the noted critics and former greats including Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, Ramiz Raja, Rashid Latif and others have admired Sarfraz’s guts and flair as a captain, Sallu further added”.
“Yasir Shah was outstanding with the ball and I have seen such an amazing spell in Test cricket after a long time,” Sallu said.
He added that Yasir’s performance boosted the confidence of the team and their positive body language was enough to pull a convincing win over visitors.
Answer to another query, Sallu said that Yasir is an outstanding bowler as compared to Shadab Khan.
Unfortunately Shadab got many chances but fail to perform like Yasir Shah in Tests.

The former Test cricketer praised Babar Azam and Haris Sohail for scoring centuries at the crucial point for Pakistan which helped their team to reach a mammoth total.
He guided batsmen and said that in Test cricket, you need to spend as much time as you can at the crease to score big.
Salahuddin Sallu lashed out at Chief Selector over non-selection of Fawad Alam in recent Test series.
Fawad is a good and consistent player in domestic but I fail to understand that why he was not selected despite his excellent performance.
“The domestic cricket was being weakened and ignored, no players are being selected from this format of the cricket. In this situation the domestic cricket becomes redundant,” Sallu added.
He hoped that Pakistan clinch Test series against New Zealand.

Powerful sheikh quits top Olympic body amid late drama
NC Monitoring Desk
TOKYO: One of the most influential figures in international sport yesterday officially stepped down from a powerful Olympic body as he fights forgery charges in Switzerland.
Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah had already announced he was “temporarily” stepping aside from his IOC duties and asked not to be re-elected president of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
“I am confident I am innocent. I trust the court of justice in Switzerland … I know I am innocent. I am sure about that and I will follow through on my trust in the court in Switzerland,” he told delegates.
“I will decide to step aside — of my own will — for a while and to come back to you stronger,” added the Kuwaiti powerbroker.
But there was last-minute drama at the gathering in Tokyo as several representatives pushed for the Sheikh — the only candidate for ANOC president — to be re-elected anyway.
In chaotic scenes, delegate after delegate spoke to defend Sheikh Ahmad, arguing that he had become embroiled in a political affair that had nothing to do with sport and that was being played out in the courts.
“The ship of ANOC has been sailing rather smoothly and now is not the time to change the captain,” said the representative from Guyana.
After an unscheduled last-minute intervention from the Sheikh, delegates finally agreed to postpone the election for president while he sorts out his legal issues.
Officials admitted this was a “unique” situation and there was nothing in the organisation´s constitution to deal with such a case.
A long-time IOC member seen as a close ally of President Thomas Bach, Sheikh Ahmad is accused of orchestrating a complex forgery scheme linked to his efforts to prove his native country´s former prime minister is guilty of corruption and plotting a coup.
The aim of the alleged forgery, according to a Swiss charge sheet seen by AFP, was to legitimise suspicious video recordings Sheikh Ahmad had presented in Kuwait as evidence of corrupt practices by ex-premier Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah and former parliament chief Jassem al-Khorafi.
The case against Sheikh Ahmad, a nephew of Kuwait´s ruler, Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, is set to go before a court in Geneva next year.
