MEDICINE HAT – With one year to go, preparations are in full swing for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, set for Aug. 11–15, 2026, in Medicine Hat — the city’s biggest-ever sporting event.

Over 1,700 athletes, 1,200 volunteers, and thousands of visitors are expected. Originally planned for 2022 but postponed due to COVID, the Games will feature 10 sports and a $4 million budget. Organizers are seeking volunteers, sponsors, and donations through socmedhat2026.ca.

Games chair Brian Varga says the goal is to make it the best event possible, while veteran athlete Christine Sullivan is excited to welcome participants from across Canada: “Enjoy Medicine Hat and have lots of fun.”
