A total of 261 jerseys belonging to Indian Premier League (IPL) cricketers were stolen from Mumbai’s Wankhede Cricket Stadium, with an estimated worth of over INR 650,000. A case has been registered against a security manager in connection with the theft.
According to Indian media reports, the theft occurred at the official merchandise store of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) located inside the Wankhede Stadium. The stolen items include jerseys of multiple IPL teams.
Mumbai Police have registered a case against the security manager, a resident of Mira Road East, who allegedly entered the store without permission on June 13 and stole the jerseys.
The theft came to light during a recent audit, which revealed discrepancies in the stock. Following this, BCCI officials reviewed CCTV footage that reportedly showed the security manager carrying away a cardboard box.
Based on the footage, BCCI employee Hemang Bharat Kumar filed a complaint with Mumbai Police on July 17, stating that the stolen items included jerseys from several IPL franchises such as Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and others.
An FIR has been registered under Section 306, and investigations are underway. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to trace the stolen jerseys and determine the sequence of events.
